Phái đoàn EU tại Việt Nam bày tỏ quan ngại về việc Tòa án Nhân dân Tối cao Hà Nội hôm nay bác bỏ kháng cáo của luật sư Lê Quốc Quân đối với án phạt 30 tháng tù giam và phạt tiền vì tội trốn thuế trước đó.
Vào tháng Tám 2013, Ủy Ban Điều Tra về Bắt Giữ Tùy Tiện của Liên Hiệp Quốc ra phán quyết rằng việc giam giữ ông là tùy tiện và vi phạm các tiêu chuẩn xét xử công bằng. Ủy Ban yêu cầu Chính quyền lấy những biện pháp cần thiết để cải sửa tình trạng này.
Chúng tôi xin nhắc lại quyền căn bản của mọi người được bày tỏ ý kiến tự do và ôn hòa, theo Bản Tuyên Ngôn Quốc Tế Nhân Quyền và Hiệp Ước Quốc Tế về Quyền Dân Sự và Chính Trị mà Việt Nam đã ký kết. Bản án trên là một thất vọng đặc biệt trong khung cảnh Việt Nam được bầu vào Ủy Ban Nhân Quyền Liên Hiệp Quốc.
Phái đoàn xin lập lại những lời kêu gọi trước đây rằng Việt Nam hãy tôn trọng quyền tự do ngôn luận và thả hết những người cổ xúy một cách ôn hòa cho nhân quyền trong nước.
Liên Hiệp Âu Châu cũng sẵn sàng tiếp tục làm việc cùng với Việt Nam về những việc này và những vấn đề về nhân quyền và pháp luật khác.

Message from the Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam on lawyer Le Quoc Quan's appeal trial
The European Union Delegation to Vietnam expresses its concern over today's rejection, by Hanoi's Supreme People's Court, of blogger and lawyer Le Quoc Quan's appeal against his earlier sentence to 30 months in prison and monetary penalties on tax evasion charges.
In August 2013, the United Nations Human Rights Council Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found his detention to be arbitrary for violation of fair trial standards and requested the Government to take necessary steps to remedy his situation.
We recall the fundamental right for all persons to hold opinions and freely and peacefully express them, in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which Vietnam is a party. The sentencing is particularly disappointing in light of Vietnam’s election to the UN Human Rights Council.
The Delegation reiterates prior calls on Vietnam to respect the right to freedom of expression and for the release of all peaceful advocates of human rights in the country.
The EU also expresses its readiness to continue working in partnership with Vietnam on these and other human rights and rule of law issues.
